We are very excited that the National Council for History Education has selected a Bennett Award to present to Senator Robert C. Byrd of West Virgina. The Bennett Award “Soaring” will be presented to Senator Byrd in recognition of his distinguished leadership in advancing the study of history in our nation’s schools. The unique award will also be used as on ongoing award named in Senator Byrd’s honor – the Senator Robert C. Byrd Award. The National Council for History Education established the award to be given to policy makers and public speakers who work to ensure that history is a strong and meaningful part of our student’s education.

The presentation ceremony will take place on Wednesday, September 24, 2008 at 4:00 pm in the Mansfield Room in the United States Capital in Washington D.C. David McCullough — Pulitzer Prize-winning historian, Medal of Freedom recipient, and member of the National Council for History Education’s Board of Trustees — will present the unique recognition award to Senator Byrd.
