WomenHeart, the national coalition for women with heart disease, selected Bennett recognition awards for a set of achievement awards they recently presented. These unique awards were adopted for WomenHeart’s Wegner Awards, the only national achievement awards honoring those who are making extraordinary contributions to women’s heart health. The Wegner Awards are named in honor of Nanette Kass Wegner, MD, a pioneer in women’s cardiovascular disease. The unique Bennett recognition awards design “Hearts of Fire” was used for these distinctive awards. These achievement awards featured a brushed pewter finish, and were mounted on black bases with a customized plate engraved with the WomenHeart logo, the name and date of the award, and the name of the award recipient. Wegner recognition trophies were given to two individuals and two groups:
These recognition trophies were presented to honorees at the 11th Annual Wegner Awards hosted by WomenHeart. This awards ceremony was held June 20, 2011, at the Mead Center for Theater in Washington DC. WomenHeart: The National Coalition for Women with Heart Disease is the nation’s only patient-centered organization serving the 42 million American women living with or at risk for heart disease – the leading cause of death in women.

As economist Bruno S. Fray wisely noted, “Individuals have an innate desire to distinguish themselves from other individuals.” And one easy way companies can fulfill that desire for their employees, in exchange for valuable accelerated effort and loyalty to the corporation is by giving recognition awards. For the employees, Fray explains, “Awards serve as a means to signal social status,” which is especially valuable in the egalitarian environment that makes up most individual corporate positions and titles, not to mention the general middle class of Western society. Here, where distinguishing oneself is more difficult, receiving a corporate award can help employees feel more distinguished or valuable, especially elevating when the award is beautiful enough to proudly and publicly display to society. Giving these achievement awards, however, also benefits the employer. In his essay, Giving and Receiving Awards, Fray notes that “awards can be seen as devices that, like monetary income and intrinsic motivation, motivate individuals to exert effort.” As most managers know, more effort means more productivity, efficiency, and quality production and service from employees, all well worth the price of an affordable recognition award. The prestige that comes with receiving corporate awards will have employees already excited to display their award, and they will only feel more incentive to do so if the award is unique, aesthetically pleasing, and visibly high quality, like the awards offered at Bennett Awards.

Seemingly, there are so many options are out there for recognition awards, but upon taking a closer look, it becomes apparent that many achievement awards are simply replicas of existing award styles, usually consisting of a plain plaque or generic trophy. Sometimes, companies hoping try something different will try awarding employees with paperweights or pens. But again, they end up giving something that isn’t truly special, and that ultimately fails to recognize the employee or the achievement as special. Luckily, by looking beyond all the usual options, companies can find that unique awards do exist. For example, the sculpture awards offered at Bennett Awards clearly represent something special that employees could actually feel honored to receive. These awards are literally sculptures; pieces of artwork designed by expert sculptors with beauty and meaning in every flowing line and intricate detail. The craftsmanship and quality that goes into them set them apart from any awards on the market today. Besides the appeal of their uniqueness, it is safe to say there are few people who wouldn’t prefer an elegant fine art sculpture over a plaque or paperweight. Another option for those seeking unique award alternatives are entirely custom awards, created from scratch to reflect your company’s exact needs and preferences. The design is up to you, and can be virtually anything, from specific replications of logos or artistic interpretations of the company or the achievement itself. Also offered at Bennett Awards, these custom options not only provide recipients with a piece of art, but with one that is inspired by and will forever represent your company in the minds of anyone who sees it.

In our soft economy, when employees should arguably feel lucky to have a job in the first place, managers might wonder why they should bother with corporate recognition awards at all. Bob Nelson, best-selling author and expert in the field, explains that while money is important to employees, it is thoughtful recognition that really motivates them to perform at higher levels, which a unique award, for instance, would certainly achieve. In his book 1001 Ways to Reward Employees, Nelson explains that “part of the power of such rewards comes from the knowledge that someone took the time to notice the achievement, seek out the employee responsible, and personally deliver praise in a timely manner.” Such recognition motivates employees to continue working at such admirable levels, knowing that it won’t go unrecognized. But how does a company or a manager go about such recognition, in an appropriate yet cost-effective manner? A basic plaque may be too insignificant, while an elaborate vacation or trip may not make sense for budgetary reasons. Nelson suggests that “managers need to think about what their employees need and what’s important to them.” An elegant awards trophy may be the perfect solution. For example, the unique trophies offered at Bennett Awards are actually intended to be sculptures, providing recognized employees not only with significant acknowledgment of their achievements, but with a beautiful and timeless piece of artwork as well. Considering that these awards will probably end up being proudly displayed in the employee’s home or office, they may just even end up motivating fellow co-workers as well.
