Senator George J. Mitchell was among the award recipients of a set of unique Bennett recognition awards recently presented by Fordham Law School. These achievement awards were presented as part of the Fifth Anniversary Celebration of the Feerick Center for Social Justice of Fordham Law School. Three recognition trophies were presented as part of this awards ceremony:

  • Senator Mitchell received the George J. Mitchell Award, which was established in his name to recognize an individual for lifetime contributions in establishing a more just world. Senator Mitchell, a former visiting professor at Fordham Law School, was recognized for his social justice work in the Northern Ireland peace process, and his work as a special presidential envoy for Middle East peace.
  • Robert C. Sheehan, former managing partner of Skadden Arps Slate Meagher & Flom, received the Spirit of Service Award, which recognizes an individual who, through volunteer and pro bono activities, helps to alleviate poverty.
  • David R. Jones of the NY Community Service Society received the Life of Commitment Award, which recognizes an individual who has spent a substantial part of their professional life working to alleviate poverty.

These achievement trophies were presented to their recipients on September 26, 2011, at an awards ceremony held at the headquarters of Mutual of America in New York.

The unique Bennett recognition awards design “In Our Hands”, designed by artist Terrie Bennett, was used for the George J. Mitchell award. The Bennett recognition trophy Solid Partners” was used for the other two achievement awards. All of these awards featured customized, personalized engraving that indicated the name of the award, purpose of presentation, and award recipient.
